"This year, bidding for photovoltaic power generation projects has become the main force of renewable energy development in Southeast Asian countries, accounting for 90% of all open bidding projects. Up to now, the bidding scale of photovoltaic power generation projects in Malaysia and Myanmar has reached the level of gigawatt. As an emerging market, the construction scale of photovoltaic power generation projects in Southeast Asian countries has been expanding since 2019. Among them, Vietnam once became a leader in promoting the development of photovoltaic industry in the region. According to wood Mackenzie's statistics, in 2019, Vietnam's newly installed photovoltaic power generation capacity will reach 5.4 GW, accounting for 44% of the total installed capacity in Southeast Asia.

In Hu Dan's view, the rapid expansion of photovoltaic power generation capacity in Southeast Asia is mainly driven by national policies. Taking Vietnam as an example, in 2017, the Vietnamese government promulgated the on grid tariff policy and successfully applied for the approved projects exceeding 7 GW, which led to the rapid rise of Vietnam's photovoltaic market. "From the perspective of this year's development situation, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar and other countries have successively issued and adjusted photovoltaic support policies and open bidding projects. The growth momentum of photovoltaic market in Southeast Asia has expanded from Vietnam to many countries."

According to the data, as of 2019, the cumulative installed capacity of photovoltaic power generation in Southeast Asia exceeds 14 GW, of which ground photovoltaic power stations are the main. Since this year, Southeast Asian countries have also announced the scale of public bidding for ground photovoltaic power stations, with a cumulative bidding scale of more than 5 GW. Among them, the Philippines has announced the bidding scale with a total capacity of 2.5 GW; the total bidding volume of Malaysia and Myanmar is more than 1 GW; and the bidding capacity of Vietnam is 0.5 GW.

According to the global energy monitoring agency, with the change of financial market's investment attitude towards coal and power industry, in recent years, energy planning of Southeast Asian countries is transforming from traditional energy to new energy, and the new installed capacity of coal and power has been reduced by half in less than five years. Under the background of weak infrastructure and increasing power gap, photovoltaic has become a new hot spot of energy development in the region.

The continuous expansion of the installed scale of photovoltaic power generation promotes the maturity of photovoltaic market in Southeast Asia. Hu Dan believes that no matter in the mature photovoltaic market or the emerging photovoltaic market, the development of the industry must go through the process from stimulating demand growth by subsidies to driving project construction through open bidding. "This can promote a rapid decline in the cost of photovoltaic power generation."

Vietnam has adjusted the grid price of photovoltaic power generation for many times. At present, its on grid price is about 71 cents / kWh, which is one of the countries with higher subsidies in Southeast Asia. In contrast, the bidding price of photovoltaic power generation in Malaysia and Indonesia ranges from 54 cents / kWh to 58 cents / kWh, while the electricity prices in Pakistan and Cambodia are lower, ranging from 36 cents / kWh to 38 cents / kWh. In most areas of Southeast Asia, photovoltaic power generation has shown certain economic advantages.

Short term demand restrained by epidemic situation

In the context of global energy transformation, Southeast Asian countries have also formulated specific long-term goals for renewable energy development. For example, Sri Lanka's goal is "to achieve 70% of renewable power generation by 2030", while Pakistan's goal is "to achieve 30% renewable power generation by 2030".

However, according to a senior executive of a domestic photovoltaic inverter enterprise, "at present, from the perspective of the shipment volume of each major link in the industrial chain, the demand in the Southeast Asian market has not declined significantly. In addition, although some projects under construction have been delayed due to the impact of the epidemic, the demand for these projects under construction and potential projects will recover after the epidemic situation improves. "

Hu Dan agreed: "in the long run, renewable energy power is an indispensable part of the future energy structure transformation, and the development prospect is still bright."

According to wood Mackenzie's prediction, there is still a lot of room for development in the photovoltaic market in Southeast Asia, and the application scenarios including ground photovoltaic power stations and floating photovoltaic power stations will continue to expand. By 2024, the cumulative installed capacity of photovoltaic power generation in the region will exceed 35 GW.

Hu Dan told reporters: "with the continuous improvement of the economy and competitiveness of photovoltaic power generation, the ground photovoltaic power station is no longer the only power source to promote the development of the photovoltaic industry, and distributed photovoltaic also began to enter the mass market. It is estimated that by 2024, the newly installed capacity of distributed photovoltaic projects in Southeast Asia will account for 30% - 35% of the total installed capacity of photovoltaic projects in that year. Taking Vietnam as an example, by the end of July this year, the cumulative installed capacity of distributed photovoltaic reached 925.8 MW. From January to July this year, the newly installed capacity of distributed photovoltaic system in Vietnam was 547.8 MW, mainly industrial and commercial photovoltaic projects.
